Dr. Sang Jun Yhee
Cello
Dr. Sang Jun Yhee has a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Cello Performance from the
Manhattan School of Music. He earned his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from The
Juilliard School of Music and also a Konzertexamen Degree, the highest artistic degree
offered in Germany, from the Lubeck Musikhochschule.
In America, Dr. Yhee studied with world-class cellists Harvey Shapiro of the Primrose
String Quartet, David Soyer of the Guarneri Quartet, and Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard
Quartet. In Germany, he studied under the scholarship awards of the DAAD (Deutsche
Academic Exchange Service) and the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund.
Dr. Yhee has performed all over the world including at Usedom Music Festival in
Germany, the Chigiana Academy in Italy, Interlaken Classics in Switzerland, and the
International Mendelssohn Festival in Hamburg. He was also a winner or finalist for
numerous international and domestic cello competitions and subsequently has played
with many orchestras as a soloist. His most recent orchestral performance was the
Saint Saens Cello Concerto No.1 with the Hamburg Camerata Orchestra.
Additionally, Dr. Yhee has worked extensively and performed with the distinguished
cellists David Geringas, Arto Noras, Troels Svane, and Jens Peter Maintz. Through his
interactions with them, he has learned how to best play the cello and also has observed
and assimilated their styles of teaching and approach to music. The exposure to these
various styles has strengthened his teaching philosophy, allowing him to teach in a
flexible and tailored manner for different students. He capably nurtures technical
proficiency and artistry for solo, chamber, and orchestral playing.
He has a passion for teaching as he finds it one of the most rewarding processes of
sharing and exploring music.
Dr. Yhee currently serves as a substitute cellist for the Philadelphia Orchestra.
